Friday November 29th, Hans Alf Gallery invites everyone to join the opening of the last show of 2024; Frank Fischer's "Treasures from the Vault", in which he deciphers his favourite works by fellow artists from the HAG fold.
In what will be his first major solo with the gallery since 2019, acclaimed Swiss painter Frank Fischer dives into our archives to reemerge with a series of 16 paintings that translates into a veritable tribute to his fellow HAG artists.
As always, Swiss painter Frank Fischer bases his works on those of existing artists: The colour scheme of each individual painting is deciphered and reproduced in Fischer’s meticulous drip-painting technique, so that the finished work becomes a representation of the original, a paraphrase or an homage, if you will. In the past, Fischer has exhibited exclusive series tracing the steps of artists such as Cy Twombly, Michael Craig-Martin and Emil Nolde, but this time around, he has been given free reins to explore the Hans Alf Gallery image archive, and thus base his exhibition on the works of his immediate colleagues from the HAG fold. The result is a beautiful and sincere tribute to 13 different artists such as Erik A. Frandsen, Mie Olise Kjærgaard, Christian Lemmerz and Deborah Brown.
Since relocating to Den Haag in Holland in 2019 after two decades in London, Frank Fischer has explored the use of acrylic paint instead of oil, spending a handful of years and thousands of hours perfecting the glossy depth and shine, he demands from his paintings. Thus “Treasures from the Vault” consists exclusively of acrylic paintings – a first with the gallery. The use of acrylic paint makes for a harder, more durable surface, while simultaneously speeding up the production time, as acrylic dries much faster than oil. This allows for a more concentrated workflow, as Fischer is now able to focus on one painting at a time, as opposed to always working on several, while waiting days or even weeks for the oil to dry.
In "Treasures from the Vault", Frank Fischer has deciphered works by Anders Brinch, Mie Olise Kjærgaard, Erik A. Frandsen, Ralf Kokke, Anders SCRMN Meisner, Anne Torpe, Christian Lemmerz, Deborah Brown, Armin Boehm, Christian Achenbach, Magnus Fisker, Martin Bigum and his old friend from art school in London, Natasha Kissell. The show will be Fischer's eighth solo exhibition with the gallery.
”Treasures from the Vault" opens November 29 and will be on view through December 21 in the main gallery.
